Xperia Play Launches Next Week On Verizon

Xperia Play Launches Next Week On VerizonThe Xperia Play, Sony’s first shot at taking some power away from Apple and the iPhone, will be launching soon on Verizon.

Sony announced the Xperia Play back in February, but leaked models of the phone had been sighted multiple times in the wild. It was then revealed in an official video that showed off the possibilities it promised. Those possibilities have yet to catch on a big way like Sony hoped with several news outlets pointing to less than stellar game sales when it was released earlier in Europe. It is now making its way stateside after several delays and Sony is hoping it will be more of a competitor to the iPhone in the U.S.

The Xperia Play is available now exclusively on Verizon Wireless. It will launch next week on May 26th and will run you $199 with a 2 year contract with a $29.99 monthly data plan. It will come with Android 2.3 Gingerbread installed. The Xperia Play will come packed with seven games installed that span several genres. Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, Madden NFL 11, Star Battalion, The Sims 3, Tetris, Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior, and Crash Bandicoot which is a PlayStation original. Sony is promising 50 downloadable games will be available at launch which will include some emulated PlayStation 1 games. We will have to wait and see whether or not Sony’s “PlayStation Phone” will be as huge as everybody thought it might be when first rumored.
