Epic Games has announced that they have ported their Unreal Engine 3 technology to the iPhone 3GS and third-gen iPod Touch.
The Unreal Engine 3 is the technology behind such games as Gears of War 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum and now it is coming to the iPhone 3GS and third-gen iPod Touch. AnandTech interviewed Epic’s Vice-President, Mark Rein and he made the announcement. He also said that they are planning on bringing the engine to unannounced mobile platform but that won’t be announced until CES 2010. The most obvious guess would be that UE3 could be coming to the Zune HD. We will just have to wait until next month to hear the official word.
Along with the announcement, Epic has released a very short demo video of UE3 playing on an iPod Touch. The demo is a level that was modified from Unreal Tournament and it looks pretty amazing. The controls are setup so you move by touching the bottom left corner of the screen and you shoot by touching the bottom right. You can then look around by swiping your finger across the screen. We will have to wait to see how well it plays but the interviewer said that the frame rate was smooth. Epic Games is looking to license out the technology to other developers. I’m excited to see what kind of games will come out of this. Could we see a Gears of War game on the iPhone? Check out the short demo video after the break.
That’s totally awesome!!!!
