Amid rumors, Sony has officially discontinued production of the PSP Go.
Originally, Engadget reported on a blog that was reportedly being posted to by a Sony employee that stated the production of the PSP Go had been halted. Sony has officially confirmed the news to the Japanese site Impress Watch. In the confirmation, Sony says they will continue with support, firmware updates, and repair for the PSP Go, but no new units would be built.
The news shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to anybody. The UMD-less PSP Go did not sell well from the start because of its high price and with not a lot of added value over the current model. Combine this with the announcement of the PSP 2 codenamed NGP that will be released this holiday season and you had to know the PSP Go’s days were numbered.
[UPDATE]
Sony has clarified that production on the PSP Go has only been discontinued in Japan and Europe. Production in North America will continue for the foreseeable future.
