Harmonix announced today that they will be releasing Rock Band 3 this holiday season and promises new innovations.
Everybody knew that eventually Rock Band 3 would be announced and today Harmonix announced the newest addition to the franchise on their Facebook page. Harmonix promises to bring new innovations to the musical genre and we hope they are right. The music game genre has grown a little stagnant and just seems to be the same thing over and over with a couple of new features, a new list of songs, and more plastic instruments to clutter up our houses. The original Rock Band changed everything when it was released back in 2007 and let's hope the new one will try and do the same. Dhani Harrison, the son of George Harrison, announced during an interview with the Chicago Tribune via Kotaku that Rock Band 3 would teach you how to play music which sounds pretty interesting but I'm not sure if it sounds like much fun though.
No official release date has been given for Rock Band 3 other than a Holiday 2010 release window. The announcement doesn't mention which platforms we can expect to see it on either but I'm sure it will be released on everything.
Square Enix announced that a new Tomb Raider game entitled Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is under development and it will be a big departure from previous games.
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will be the next installment in the long-running series. Unlike previous games, the new Tomb Raider game will be played from an isometric viewpoint and will feature co-operative play. You will be able to take control of Lara Croft and also Tetoc who is a Mayan tribesman. Crystal Dynamics will again be in charge of the game's development and they are shooting for a Summer release window. Another big change for the series is that it will be a download only game. The gameplay will focus on arcade action and old school puzzle solving. The co-op mode will allow for drop in and drop out gameplay. I'm pretty excited to see the new direction they are taking the series and see if it plays as good as it looks.
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will be released as a download only title this Summer 2010. Check out the screenshots in our gallery.
Activision has announced that a new installment in the Call of Duty franchise is currently being developed and will be available sometime in 2011.
Before you get too excited about the new Call of Duty announcement, I must mention that it will not be a new FPS. Development is being handed off to Sledgehammer Games, a brand new studio created by Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey. They both previously worked at Visceral Games, the studio that created Dead Space. Instead of going the obvious route of creating another FPS, they have elected to make an action adventure game. We can expect to see the new game sometime in 2011.
Completely overshadowing the new game announcement, rumors have surfaced and then were confirmed that two top people from Infinity Ward were fired today. Infinity Ward, the developers behind the insanely popular Modern Warfare 2, is apparently without their President and CEO. Jason West and Vince Zampella were both removed from their positions for rumored breach of contract and insubordination. Several sources are suggesting that Infinity Ward was looking to create a new IP and that they were shopping this to publishing rivals of Activision. These are all just rumors at this point but sources have stated that some bouncer types showed up at the Infinity Ward offices and that West and Zampella were nowhere to be found after a meeting with Activision. Stay tuned to hear more as the Infinity Ward/Activision soap opera continues.
Warner Bros. has announced they have purchased Rocksteady Studios, the developer behind Batman: Arkham Asylum.
Batman: Arkham Asylum was one the biggest hits of last year and now the studio behind the game have been purchased by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Rocksteady Studios kind of came out nowhere last year and released what many people believe was a real Game of the Year contender. They received a Studio of the Year award at the 2009 VGAs. At that same awards show, Rocksteady announced they are currently working on Batman: Arkham Asylum 2. If it is anything like the original game, the studio will have another huge hit on their hands. It made a lot of sense for Warner Bros. to take a majority stake in the studio as I'm sure it will be a great investment for both parties.
No release date has been set for Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 but a teaser trailer was released during the VGAs.
Nintendo unveiled a new Super Mario Galaxy 2 trailer and officially announces a release date for the highly anticipated sequel.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 was unveiled at last year's E3 to everybody's excitement. Now Nintendo has released a new trailer for the game and also announced when we can get our hands on it. The new Super Mario Galaxy 2 trailer was unveiled at the recent Nintendo Media Summit 2010. It shows off more gameplay footage including the new drill that looks really cool. It allows you to drill through a planet and come out the other side. That adds a lot of gameplay variations to the game and it looks like Nintendo is taking full advantage of it. SMG2's level variation and creativity looks awesome and the bosses look pretty cool too. We also get to see the new and improved Yoshi in the new trailer. He is now able to use his tongue to swing and pull with and he gains different powers whenever he eats the fruit lying around. One such power that is in the trailer allows Yoshi to inflate and then float up like a balloon. It's a pretty cool trailer that definitely should get Mario fans really excited.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is going to be released exclusively for the Nintendo Wii on May 23rd. Check out the new gameplay footage after the jump.Read more...
There have been numerous rumors floating around that Nintendo may possibly have a new hardware announcement at this year's GDC 2010.
Nintendo has been tight lipped about any new hardware announcements but many people believe it could possibly be the rumored Nintendo Wii HD. Nintendo has denied all rumors up to this point but now VideoGamer.com has a rumor on their site that quotes an unnamed developer. Their source apparently knows other developers that are already working on the new platform and that it might be announced at this year's Game Developers Conference.
We will definitely keep this one in our rumor pile until we get official confirmation but there have been too many rumors floating around to just dismiss it. No word on whether it could be a new handheld or home console. It would seem odd if it was a new handheld after the fairly recent announcement of the Nintendo DSi XL. We will keep our eye out for any new information but we might get an announcement as soon as early next month.
Rockstar Games has finally given the other GTA IV fans some love and officially announced that Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City will be coming to the PlayStation 3 and the PC.
Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City was originally exclusive to Xbox 360 due to the DLC deal made between Microsoft and Rockstar before GTA IV was released. The retail disc includes both DLC episodes, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony which were originally only available to Xbox 360 owners. PlayStation 3 and PC owners will now be able to play these very well-received episodes themselves and not have to act like they weren't bothered by the original announcement. Many people believed that the episodes would eventually make their way to other consoles once the exclusive deal expired or that maybe they would receive their own. In addition to the retail release, PS3 owners will be able to download the individual episodes on PSN.
Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City and the individual episodes will be released for PlayStation 3 and the PC on March 30th.
Apple hosted a huge press conference today to announce their newest gadget, the iPad, a super-sized version of the iPhone.
Rumors and speculation have been flying around for months now about whether or not Apple would release a tablet computer and today it finally became official. The iPad has a 10 inch widescreen multi-touch display and will be compatible with all current and future apps in the App store. The screen will support a resolution of 1024 X 768 pixels. The base model will be a 16GB Wi-Fi only tablet for $499 and there will be 32GB and 64GB models going for $599 and $699 respectively. You can add 3G to any model for $130 plus a monthly fee from AT&T to use it. Apple released a SDK today that will allow developers to create specific apps for the new iPad as well as adapt their current ones to take advantage of the new real estate.
So what does the new tablet mean to gaming? Apple brought out EA during their presentation to show off Need for Speed: Shift running on the new tablet. You control the car by turning the tablet like a steering wheel and you can tap the screen to change the camera to an in-car view. From this view you can shift the car by sliding over the gear shift and look behind you by tapping the mirror. We have no doubt that the iPad will affect gaming in some way much like the iPhone but to what degree we're not sure yet. I'm excited whenever someone creates another avenue for people to enjoy games on and I can't wait to see what developers come up with.
The Apple iPad 16GB Wi-Fi only model will be available in March with the other models following along in April.
Ruffian Games has confirmed they will be releasing a demo of Crackdown 2 before its release.
Crackdown 2 was one of those games that a lot of people wanted but thought might never happen. When it was announced at last year's E3, fans of the first game rejoiced even though the game was in the hands of another developer. Microsoft had decided to go with newly formed studio, Ruffian Games, which was formed by former members of the original Crackdown team at Realtime Worlds.
James Cope, the Producer on the upcoming sequel, was interviewed by IGN where he reveals more details about the game. During the interview he confirmed that they will be releasing a demo of the game on Xbox LIVE before its release later this year. He stated that "The Crackdown demo was fantastic and we want to carry on in that form". That is great news for anybody that might want to try out the game before they buy it. Fans of the original game will tell you that if it is anything like the original, this will be one to pick up.
There is no official release date for Crackdown 2 yet but some outlets are pointing towards a possible May release though. It will be released exclusively for the Xbox 360.
Ubisoft has pushed back the release of Splinter Cell: Conviction yet again so the waiting game continues for everybody.
Splinter Cell: Conviction has had a really bumpy development since it was announced back in 2007 including a huge visual reboot. When the newest version of the game was shown at last year's E3, everybody was really excited. The reboot was set to be released in November of last year but was pushed back to February 23rd. Now Ubisoft has delayed Splinter Cell: Conviction yet again back to a vague April 2010 release window. The delay was announced during the same press release as the sweet Assassin's Creed 3 announcement.
Ubisoft has told Eurogamer that the delay was to give the game a little more polish. If that is the case then we can't be that upset unfortunately. We always welcome when a developer wants to turn out the best game they can rather than push it out unfinished. That doesn't mean we're not disappointed though.
Splinter Cell: Conviction will hopefully be released sometime in April 2010 for Xbox 360 and the PC.
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has announced they will complete the console trifecta by bringing its movie streaming service to the Nintendo Wii.
It has long been rumored and basically announced before with Netflix's boss wanting its service to be on all three consoles. Netflix streaming will be available on the Nintendo Wii starting this spring. It will follow in the PlayStation 3's footsteps by requiring a streaming disc in order to access the service. Many people believe that this is a way to get around the Xbox 360 exclusivity to the console's dashboard and that a future firmware update could drop the requirement. You can sign up for your streaming disc now so you are ready when the service goes live.
Unfortunately for Wii users they will not be able to take advantage of the HD streaming service. Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime tries to justify the omission of HD content on the Wii during a CNBC interview stating that most of the streaming content on Netflix isn't available in HD anyway. Impressive spin Reggie. Do you think the omission of HD is important or not? Let us know in the comments.
Quantic Dream has announced the official release date for their highly anticipated game, Heavy Rain.
Heavy Rain was first announced way back at E3 2006 and we have been waiting for it to come out ever since. Well now it looks like the long wait is finally over. Quantic Dream has announced that Heavy Rain will be released on February 23rd in North America. Now that the game is only a month and a half away, hopefully we can stay away from anymore leaked footage of Heavy Rain that might contain more spoilers.
For anybody that hasn't heard of Heavy Rain yet, it will feature four playable characters as they look for a killer called "The Origami Killer". The gameplay will rely heavily on the moral choices that the player will face throughout the story and the emotions they will invoke.
Heavy Rain is going to be released exclusively for the PlayStation 3 on February 23rd.
Microsoft officially announces Game Room, a retro arcade space for Xbox LIVE and Games for Windows LIVE.
During the recent CES 2010 keynote address, Microsoft announced their new retro arcade space, Game Room. It will allow you to play 1000 retro games and customize your own arcade space while letting you compete against your friends. Each game will have achievements you can play for as well as universal leader boards so you gain bragging rights. You will be able to send out challenges to your friends and they can visit your arcade space to play demos of your games while they are there. The whole concept sounds a bit like Sony's PlayStation Home but a lot more fun.
Microsoft is taking an interesting approach to the pricing plan. Game Room will be free for download and games will cost you between 240 - 400 Microsoft points. They are also letting you play them really old school by plopping down 40 MS points for one play until you die. I'm really curious to see how this pricing plan works out and if other people will try the same approach.
Game Room will be released this spring for Xbox LIVE and Games for Windows LIVE. 30 out of the 1000 promised games have been announced so far including Centipede and Asteroids Deluxe. Check out the launch trailer after the break.Read more...
Microsoft has confirmed that Project Natal will be coming out this holiday season during their CES 2010 keynote address today.
We posted a rumor about Project Natal's possible release date a while back that said it could be coming out in November. Today, Microsoft confirmed during their CES 2010 keynote address that Project Natal will be coming out this holiday season. No word on the other rumors that we heard about the number of launch games or a price point. The original rumor said that it would be released with 14 games and that it would cost around $80. Hopefully we will hear more information soon and see if all the other rumors are true or not. They seem a lot more likely after the keynote address today.
Epic Games has announced that they have ported their Unreal Engine 3 technology to the iPhone 3GS and third-gen iPod Touch.
The Unreal Engine 3 is the technology behind such games as Gears of War 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum and now it is coming to the iPhone 3GS and third-gen iPod Touch. AnandTech interviewed Epic's Vice-President, Mark Rein and he made the announcement. He also said that they are planning on bringing the engine to unannounced mobile platform but that won't be announced until CES 2010. The most obvious guess would be that UE3 could be coming to the Zune HD. We will just have to wait until next month to hear the official word.
Along with the announcement, Epic has released a very short demo video of UE3 playing on an iPod Touch. The demo is a level that was modified from Unreal Tournament and it looks pretty amazing. The controls are setup so you move by touching the bottom left corner of the screen and you shoot by touching the bottom right. You can then look around by swiping your finger across the screen. We will have to wait to see how well it plays but the interviewer said that the frame rate was smooth. Epic Games is looking to license out the technology to other developers. I'm excited to see what kind of games will come out of this. Could we see a Gears of War game on the iPhone? Check out the short demo video after the break.Read more...
