Activision and Infinity Ward have done it again, posting huge day 1 sales figures for Modern Warfare 3.
The Call of Duty franchise has enjoyed unheard of success with its last two releases and now it can put one more award up on its mantle. We all knew the sales figures were going to be huge, but with the amount of big releases this holiday season, there was only so much money to go around. Apparently lightning can hit three times because Modern Warfare 3
has shattered the previously day one sales figure that Call of Duty: Black Ops
posted last year.
Modern Warfare 2
pulled in $310 million by selling 4.7 million copies on its first day. Black Ops, the previous record holder now, sold 5.6 million copies on day which put $360 million in Activision’s pocket. Now we have a new champion, because Modern Warfare 3 has set a new high water mark of $400 million in day one sales pushing 6.5 million copies out the door. This will go down in history as the biggest entertainment launch of all time across all forms of media.
A side story, but a very important one, is these figures blow away Battlefield 3′s
sales of 5 million units in its first week. It looks like even though MW3 is more of the same, which definitely isn’t a bad thing; it still holds the FPS crown for the foreseeable future.
