At a press conference today, Amazon finally revealed the long rumored Kindle Fire that hopes to rival the iPad 2 for the tablet throne.
A new Kindle has long been rumored and was expected to be more tablet than e-reader like earlier versions. Turns out the rumors were true now that Amazon has announced the Kindle Fire. It has a 7 inch touchscreen much like the BlackBerry PlayBook, but will only register two points of contact instead of iPad’s 10. The tablet is built on a customized version of the Android OS that will allow you to browse the web, read books, stream movies, and what we care about most, play games. Some of the examples of games the tablet will play are the huge hits Plants Vs. Zombies, Fruit Ninja, and Angry Birds. The Kindle Fire
will have 8Gb of internal memory, but will allow you keep your movies, books, music, etc… in the Amazon Cloud Storage. Another big plus is that it will support Flash which iPad fans have been wishing for. Amazon Prime members (you get 30 days free) will be able to use the company’s movie streaming service. The biggest part of the announcement though was that it will only cost you $199 when it’s released in November.
The Kindle Fire does have a few downsides to it though. The launch models will be Wi-Fi only and won’t include a microphone or camera. Whether this will keep people from ordering one remains to be seen. I think that the $199 price tag will make most of these hurdles disappear. We will have to wait and see if this will be the true iPad killer everybody is looking for, but there is little doubt that it will change the game for the entire table industry.
In addition to the Kindle Fire announcement, Amazon revealed 3 other Kindle models that will release in November as well. A low cost $79 Kindle, $99 Kindle Touch, and $149 Kindle Touch 3G will also be coming out.
The Kindle Fire is available now for pre-order for $199 and will be released on November 15th.
Kindle Fire is a good alternative for the overly priced iPad 2. Another good thing is that this tablet can provide us our daily dose of our Angry Birds game. And since it will be run by Android OS, I hope the game can be played for free. Not bad for a device worth $199!
A little rationality lifts the quality of the dbaete here. Thanks for contributing!
